Frontline Worker with Device

Improving Jobs for Better Outcomes

Dimagi is in the process of developing a new initiative, CommCare Connect, to provide opportunities for Frontline Workers to learn, deliver, verify and be paid for high-impact interventions. This work is backed by a 25 million dollar investment from the Steele Foundation for Hope that will support the building of the new digital platform.

In our long-term vision, individual workers will create free accounts on CommCare Connect and gain access to opportunities to deliver high-impact interventions, such as participating in vaccine campaigns, leading educational programs, or disseminating important information to households about early childhood development or family planning. Every opportunity on CommCare Connect will require the worker to use a provided mobile application to ensure accurate and verifiable delivery of the intervention, as well as payment to the worker.

Our objective is to digitally orchestrate millions of highly-cost effective interventions per year in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs). CommCare Connect will leverage and bolster existing health system resources and capacity while putting more money into local economies and efficiently delivering interventions where they are needed.

We are grateful to the partnership and guidance we have gotten from many organizations, including those below who have collaborated with us substantially as implementation partners, subject matter experts, and general thought partnership.

Delivering Essential Services

Dimagi and partners have developed a Child Health Campaign within CommCare Connect to scale the decentralized delivery of proven, impactful and cost-effective interventions.

According to the WHO, an estimated 5.2m children under 5 years died from preventable and treatable causes in 2019. Essential preventative interventions for children include routine immunizations, safe water, and adequate nutrition including zinc and Vitamin A supplementation(WHO; Lassi, et. al. 2014). For children 6 months to 5 years, Vitamin A supplements reduce all-cause mortality by 4-13% (Givewell). As the supplements are cheap, safe, cost-effective and scalable, the primary roadblock to significant Vitamin A disbursement is a distribution problem. This holds true for similar child health interventions such as zinc supplementation and mass deworming administration.

“An estimated 240,000–500,000 children who are vitamin A-deficient become blind every year, and half of them die within 12 months of losing their sight. Deficiency of Vitamin A is associated with significant morbidity and mortality from common childhood infections. (WHO)”

The CommCare Connect Child Health Campaign includes delivering Vitamin A and deworming tablets, screening & referral for malnutrition, and an option to include other impactful and localized interventions such as Oral Rehydration, Zinc supplementation, or chatbots with useful information (e.g. nutrition advice).

Frontline Workers and Organizations opt into delivering child health interventions using an application that Dimagi provides, and then paid for the verified delivery of the interventions to their communities. The total cost is to be $2 per child for this campaign. Following an initial trial in India, currently this Child Health Campaign is being piloted in Kenya, Tanzania, and Zambia where we expect to reach 15,000 children.

Request for Proposals

Dimagi is seeking proposals from one or more LMIC-based local organizations to scale the Child Health Campaign to cover a total population of 80,000 children. Each local PO will also receive a $15k set-up fee and $2 per child served. We expect to choose two to three awardees within June 2023, with an aim to start service implementation no later than August 2023.
